How do I know if I need to update the firmware?? I had such a problem getting the router up after switching from Earthlink to Bellsouth, that I am afraid to make any changes without asking.

Re: wrt54gx4

HI....
You first need to check what is the firmware version that is installed on your router?
To check the firmware version you need to login to the router configuration page. Open internet explorer....in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 (Default IP address) ........leave the username field blank and in the password type "admin"(Default Password if you have the password enter your changed password) ....This will take you to the router configuration page....click on the tab that says status and check what is the firmware version here.

To check the latest firmware of your router goto http://www.linksys.com/downloads ....select your product and then click on firmware. This will show the latest firmware available for the router.
The latest firmware for WRT54GX4 is 1.00.17

If I apply, will I have to go through the setup process again?

Yes, After upgrading the router firmware you need to reset the router.
After reseting the router unplug the power to the router, wait for 30-60 seconds and then reconnect the power to the router. Once all the lights on the router are steady, you need to reconfigure the router for internet connection.
