I work for a large company and want reinstall my wireless router so I move from room to room with my laptop without plugging into our network. I have had it set up before but had to spent an hour with tech support to configure the router. Recently I had to reset the password and lost all the settings.
I can get to logged into the set up with the default password but have no idea how to configure it. No matter what I try I get no conectivity when I try to redirect the browser to the internet.
Yeah, I know I should let our network IT staff set it up, but they get all bent when I want to extend my access to a wireless configuration even if it's password protected. Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks

Well, I use the wrt54G V8 wireless router. Does that work the same as yours?
I just went through adding this router as a wireless access point on my local network.
It was really pretty easy once I realised a couple things.
First, you're going to need a static IP address for the router to be assigned by your IT
folks. If you're not going to be able to get this, I'm not sure what you can do.
The router's IP address is, by default, 192.168.1.1. Assuming that you reset the
router to factory defaults, just connect a cable to one of the router's Ethernet
ports (not the Internet port) and connect the other end to a laptop. The router will
supply the laptop with an IP address and you will be able to run a browser to
http://192.168.1.1 to access the router's administrative pages. The login on
my router was admin with a password of admin, but I've seen Linksys folks
saying other things, so this may not be true on all router models.
Once connected to the administrative pages, you can assign any IP address
you want for the router's IP address. You'll see the default 192.168.1.1 in
there now.
Assuming your IT folks assign you a static IP address of 192.168.135.37 (or
whatever), then you'll want to assign that as the router's IP address in the
administrative pages. Note that once you do that, you won't be able to talk
to the router via your directly-connected laptop any longer. You'll need to
plug the router into your office network - still via one of the Ethernet ports
(not via the Internet port).
You may have to reset the router after changing its IP address, although
I didn't have to do that on mine.
WIth the router connected on your in-office network, you should be able
to access it from any other PC connected on the in-office network, by
browsing to the IT-assigned IP address (192.168.135.37 in my example
above).
Now you can enable the wireless network, assign a security mode,
passwords/pass phrases, etc.
When wireless devices negotiate the security on your wireless router,
they will act as though they were directly connected to your in-office
network.
I can provide you with more details, if you would like. Perhaps via PM?
