WRT54GS, Wake On WAN, the question for the ages!

So with my notebook, using the Depicus application and the IP address 192.168.X.X and sending the magic packet (supposedly) over the internet, my desktop boots while in the house. Sure enough, when I tried it away from the home network it didn't work. I also tried using my public IP to no avail. I've tried all kinds of different configurations (IPs and subnets) sending the magic packet through websites that offer the service without any success. Some of the other hardware: Motorola 5100 cable modem, Pentium 4, Dell motherboard, Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Perhaps booting remotely is not possible with this equipment, however like I said I'm able to boot while in the house. Any help or theories would be greatly appreciated.

You don't mention in your note, but Wake on Lan won't work if you are using a wireless lan card.  Also, since the remote computer isn't powered on, you have to send the "magic packet" to the broadcast ip of the receiving network, usually
xxx.xxx.xxx.255, even if you have assigned the remote computer a static local ip.

The desktop is hard wired to the router. In power settings I even allowed the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller to bring the pc out of standby. I'm not sure that had anything to do with booting or not but it didn't help. I've tried all kinds of tweaks.

Re: WRT54GS, Wake On WAN, the question for the ages!

You have to forward the packets to the broadcast address of the router.  Find out what port your "wake on lan"software uses, and have the router forward that port to the broadcast address of the router. If your router's lan ip is 192.168.1.1, the broadcast address is 192.168.1.255.  You must use the broadcast address because, until the computer is turned on, it doesn't have an ip, and the router can't forwrd the packets.

Some of the programs actually add the .255 automatically. I've also tried the following setup which I found mentioned here. I've set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.128 and I've forwarded the right port to the ip address XXX.XXX.XXX.127 to broadcast the magic packed, but this doesn't work. Could it be a software firewall problem? I can't find anything in the FW logs though to suggest it is. And by the way, thanks for the responses!

I also tried this: 1. Start Firefox instead of IE 2. Go to the "Port range forwarding" page of your WRT54GC 3. In Firefox, go to Tools > Options 4. Unselect "Enable JavaScript" 5. If you use the default subnet, set 192.168.1.255 as network address 6. Go again in the options of Firefox and select "Enable JavaScript" 7. Save settings on your router However, you can't save the changes if JavaScript is disable and then when you re-enable it to save them you get an "Invalid Values" alert.

Re: WRT54GS, Wake On WAN, the question for the ages!

I set up my router at work awhile ago.  It is a linksys wired router, and set it up by disabling the java script as you mentioned.  As best as I can remember, I saved the setting, and then re-enabled java script.   If I didn't disable java script, I received the "invalid setting" error.

Good luck.  It drove me nuts for a month.

Perhaps it is because of the latest firmware or just 54GS, but the save button won't function without js and then as soon as you enable js you receive the error.

Did you try it with Firefox?  Same process- open the page, disable javascript, enter info, save, and the re-enable javascript.

Re: WRT54GS, Wake On WAN, the question for the ages!

Yes, that is all I use. This whole thing has mostly become a challenge. I'm retired, so there really isn't a serious need to do this. I'm the guy who was always putting after market products on his truck (I still tinker with the car & truck) but have discovered that what ever side of my brain needs stimulated by "messing" with things, I can pacify it in the rec room 12 months out of the year. Here in NW PA the garage is mighty cold from late November to late April. My one practical reason for doing this is the fact that I can control my desktop with my laptop from anywhere with Team Viewer 3. When we go to Boston to visit the kids and grand kids, I may want to install some software, that is only free for a day, on the desktop. I do have a program that does bring this desktop out of hibernation at scheduled times so I do have a work around though. Like I said, a challenge! May go DD-WRT firmware if I can't crack this!
