Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

I have updated the firmware, but I still have to power cycle the router everyday. What else can I try?

Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

I found a work around fix. I had tried everything mentioned in the forums that I could find, but it was still losing connectivity, usually when not being used for a while. I have version 8 and I had to power cycle the router every mornimg. I got an appliance timer ($5.00) and plugged it in. I set it to turn off power for a few hours everynight. It's been two weeks with no problems. Maybe my router just overheats?

Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

I  am having or should say had a simular situation except the Router I had was a WRT54G.  It was working fine up until about 3 days ago.  Each time I start up the computer, The icon would show that my computer had excellent connection to the router and the cable modem was showing that there were proper signals.  But the diagnostic would say that I was connected to the Router but not the internet.  The first time, I was able to get things to work by unplugging the power and then plugging it back in.  The last time, I had spent over an hour before I finally got connected.

Today, I just got tired of it and now the router is in pieces.  The router, unfortunately, was sitting on top of my scanner when I hit it.  Yes, the glass on the scanner is shattered too.  The Router was under warranty but I needed to be on the internet today not weeks down the pike when a new one would show up via UPS. Rather than spend money to send it back, I just went and bought a new WRT54GS and it seems to be constant so far.

Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

Same issue here too with a version 8 router running firmware 8.00.2.  All wired and wireless clients experience extreme packet loss to the Internet from the local network.  As a test I do this:

1) Open a command prompt (under accessories on the Start menu in XP and Vista usually)
2) Type tracert -d yahoo.com.  I see something like:
Tracing route to yahoo.com [66.94.234.13]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1     3 ms    94 ms     6 ms  192.168.1.1
  2     *     *   *    69.47.8.65
  3    *    *    *   69.47.8.1
  4    13 ms    38 ms    60 ms  69.47.6.233
  5    *    23 ms    *   69.47.6.225
  6    17 ms    29 ms    21 ms  204.9.124.245
Once I cycle power on the WRT54G, all is well for a day or two and then we see this behavior again.  After chatting with LinkSys tech support, I reduced the MTU to 1400 (event though the router allows unfragmented packets as large as 1472 at all times using PING -f -l 1472 yahoo.com from a command prompt).  They also had me adjust a couple of wireless settings (which made little sense as this happens to wired clients too and I never see any packet loss between devices in my house...only to the Internet.

SandStorm's idea of buying a timer and having the device turned off automatically for a couple of minutes each night is a good one!  I'm almost to the point where I will have to do that or buy a different make of router.  This is unacceptable.  And I had such good experiences with my previous WRT54G v2! :smileysad:

Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

Are you guys using peer-to-peer software? (Bit Torrents, Limewire etc)

The default tcp connections and the connection tracking tables on the GS are pretty poor in my experience. I was having this exact problem and it was due to these tables filling up and not clearing down dead connections. I think it's exacerbated by the lower RAM on the later models of the GS (after 3.0).

I got around the problem, but I can't really say how for fear of being banned. Let's just say it was a limitation with the Linksys firmware.

Re: WRT54GS V5 have to reset everyday

JJ,  Our family's not using P2P file sharing apps (kids get grounded if I see those applications & traffic patterns).  Of course, we do have IM apps and such other P2P apps.  I'm thinking along the same lines as you.  It seems these G's running VXWorks with less system RAM just aren't as robust / stable as the older Linux based models.  My v2 WRT54G was rock solid up until it actually turned into a brick.
