WRT54GL and Xbox Live

Hey there everyone.  Lately I have had problems with my WRT54GL and Xbox Live.  When I attempt to connect to Xbox Live, it fails.  When I do a network test to check what is wrong, it says that I am connected to the Internet but I cannot connect to Xbox Live.  I have opened the correct ports on my router, and have even tried putting the Xbox 360 on the DMZ.  Neither solution has helped.  I have also tried disabling the Router's SPI Firewall and its SecureEasySetup.  Still no luck.

I have powercycled all of my network equipment and called my ISP(Time Warner Cable). My ISP has said that the problem is not on their end.  I connected the 360 wirelessly at first, but also tried connecting it directly into the router.  The Xbox still gives me the same error. The only thing I cannot try is connecting the 360 directly to the cable modem.  When I had my service installed at my new apartment, I forgot to get the 360's MAC Address logged for Time Warner Cable.  Normally, this doesn't pose a problem as the router's MAC is the only one that matters. However, it also means I can't connect directly to the modem to see if this really is a router problem.

If anyone knows of a setting or way to get this to work, I would greatly appreciate it.  I know the WRT54GL isn't certified with the little stamp of "Xbox Live Compatible", so if I need to get a new router it's not totally out of the question.  I just wanted to eliminate every possible problem that could occur before doing that.

Re: WRT54GL and Xbox Live

Connect the router directly into your computer with a Ethernet cable, Then download this to your desktop.

Open your browser and type "192.168.1.1" into the URL box, Both username and password should be "admin" unless changed.

Now locate the administrative tab and find update firmware, then install the file that you put on your desktop.

You now need to reset the router, Hold the reset button down for 30 seconds and unplug the power cable for 1 minute.

Log back into the router enable/change DHCP, Radio band 20Mhz, SSID, Broadcast channel 11-2.46Gh, Then work on getting your security set up again.

Go to advanced wireless settings
Change the beacon interval to 75, Change the fragmentation threshold to 2304, Change the RTS threshold to 2304, Now save your settings.

GoodLuck

Re: WRT54GL and Xbox Live

Matt, thank you so much for the solution!  I don't know exactly what setting has fixed it, but my 360 is now downloading a whole bunch of stuff I had backlogged when my connection went out.

I had upgraded the firmware before, but I might have not let it sit long enough after it updated.  This time I waited patiently while I held that reset button, and all is well.  I'm getting some slowdown during the download process, but that's normal when I have the window open watching the progress.

Thanks again for the solution.  Here's to hoping it stays connected!

Addendum: After a few minutes, the connection cut out. I went into the Network Connection Test on the 360, and it passed everything for the Xbox Live test. I did this three times to confirm that it was working.  Then I went back to the main menu and tried to connect. It didn't work. I restarted the 360 and after it booted up again, THEN it worked.  It is still somewhat flaky, but when it's connected it stays connected for at least a long while.  I still don't know what is actually causing the disconnect, but I may try connecting the Xbox with a network cable to my router. We'll see how that works out.

Re: WRT54GL and Xbox Live

[ Edited ]

My problem has come back with a vengeance. Earlier this evening I was able to log into Xbox Live and download some items I had been waiting on.  Unfortunately after a few minutes the downloads stopped and I found out I was disconnected.  I have since then powercycled everything and tried connecting the 360 directly into the router. I can connect to the router and the Internet, but the Xbox Live test fails every time.  The "More Info" for the error tells me that I can connect to the Internet but not Xbox Live. It also tells me to make sure Port 3074 is open on the router, which I can confirm is open.

Tomorrow I am going to get another router and see if that fixes the problem.  I cannot think of any security measure that would block Xbox Live specifically.  I know my router isn't listed on the "Xbox Live Compatible" routers, but I have connected before, even today.  The problem either lies with the router(which I can check tomorrow by putting another one in), cable modem(which I will call my ISP about), or the 360 itself(which, to be honest, is about two and a half years old and might very well be the culprit).

If there are any other ideas as to why my computer can access the Internet fine and my 360 cannot(At least to get to Xbox Live), I'd be happy to hear them.  Any old suggestion, no matter how crazy, is fair game.

EDIT: All signs point to this being a 360 problem. In their network test, it went all the way through no less than three times.  Yes, even to Xbox Live.  Then, I went back and attempted to sign in to my account.  It says I can't connect to Xbox Live!  I have no idea what's going on now. Maybe something with my gamertag?  This is when everything is connected with a wired connection, by the way.  Any ideas?

Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...

Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...

1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done...

2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...

3) Click on set-up and change the MTU Size to 1452 and click Save Settings...Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...

4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...

5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...

6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...

7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...
