How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

I have a Linksys WRT120N wireless router. There is NO broadband modem connected to it. There is only a dialup modem inside the desktop computer.

Windows XP SP3 is sensing that there is an always on connection to the internet with the Linksys WRT120N

Question: How to I configure the Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

Thanks,

You have to use ICS. See here.

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

I'll need some step-step instructions, sorry.

Here's how far I got:

Opened IE changed 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.2 and disabled DHCP Server: Uncertain about changing "Internet Connection Type" from automatic to static. If I do change to "static" where do I get the numbers to fill-in?

(Since it is dialup, do I need to fill the numbers in? I do need to connect another computer wirelessly to the Linksys WRT120N for internet access through the other computers dialup connection)

I also Ran the New Connection Wizard, selected "Setup for Home or Small Office Network"

Please help with step-by-step instruction, thanks.

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

I nowhere mentioned to change the internet connection type. Leave it at automatic.

You have to run the internet connection sharing wizard in Windows. Check windows help for details. There you will find excellent step-by-step instructions.

You share the dial-up connection to the ethernet port in your computer. Then the computer will dial-up into the internet and other computers can access the internet through that computer.

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

I'm really sorry, but it's not working.

Here's the problem in more detail:

I ran through windows new connection wizard, but it didn't solve the problem.

For the moment, I'm not focusing on connecting to another computer wirelessly.  In order to get it working properly, I'm focused on getting windows xp sp3 to see the default internet connection as dialup instead of broadband.

I went to:

Control Panel
Local Area Connection
Right-click Local Area Conneciton
Choose Properties
Uncheck Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Clicking "ok" gives a message that Client for Microsoft Networks and File an Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks will ALSO be unchecked.
Clicking "ok".  (There's no choice to uncheck printer sharing and client for microsoft networks.)

This "fix" will cause windows xp to sense dialup as default internet connection, but it will NOT allow other computers to see the network.  So, I re-checked the boxes again and proceeded with your first post.

Following your suggested link in your first post, I changed the settings in Linksys, but, the suggestion to change DHCP Server to disabled caused no access to Linksys setup.  Manually resetting router back to factory defaults allowed me back in.  So, the change to DHCP Server has not been made, it remains enabled.
This is where I'm at now.

Sorry for all the trouble.  Any more ideas?

Thanks

FYI:
I'm not sure how to check or configure the dialup port and ethernet port as the same.

I don't know how it's called on your computer but last time I have checked it was called "Internet Connection Sharing". The new connection wizard does something else.

On the computer with the dial-up, open a command prompt window and enter "ipconfig /all". Copy the full output into your response. That should show whether you have set up ICS correctly or not.

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

Update

The DHCP Server "disabled" setting doesn't stick, it returns to "enable" when returning to the configuartion settings tab, for whatever reason.

Anyway, everything else seems to be there, including the "MSHOME" for networking; but STILL doesn't recognize dialup as default connection.

Here's an example of what I'm seeing:

When a time sync program is run automatically at startup, before the Linksys router was added, it would WAIT for dialup connection to be made BEFORE syncing the time.

After Linksys router was added to the computer, the time sync program, when starting with windows, will NOT WAIT for a dialup connection to be made, it will attempt to sync with NO DIALUP CONNECTION being made.

A temporary fix has been to go to Local Area Connection (the Linksys router connection), right-click and uncheck Internet Protocol (which will also uncheck client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing).

I've manually reset Linksys router back to factory defaults and waiting for any help.

The USB Adapter has not been configured to work with the computer that will be networked.  Currently, I plugged it into the computer with the Linksys router to quickly give you all the information I have for the ipconfig /all

(The networked computer will not always be used.  What prompted my post, is that first, what I am really after is trying to fix this problem with the time sync program seeing the internet connection as "on" when a dialup connection has not yet been made.  Then, I'll focus on the second computer networking.)

As you requested here's the ipconfig /all info:

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

The ipconfig output is from a computer which is not configured for ICS. In addition, there is no dial-up connection.

Please post the ipconfig /all output from the computer which will be your internet gateway. It must have a dial-up connection. It must be able to connect to the internet through dial-up.

Re: How to setup Linksys WRT120N for a dialup connection?

Now you have to run the internet connection sharing wizard on that computer. Share the PPP adapter dial-up connection to the Local Area Connection. Then run "ipconfig /all" again.
