Help to set up WPA Please

Hi Can anyone help.  We have a WRT54GS version 6 wireless router.  It has been set up and working for a while.  I have only just found out about WPA and at present have no security on it so it needs setting up quickly.  I have no idea how to do this.  I have read several other posts but the jargon completely confuses me.  Can anyone explain how to do this in really simple terms.  When i say simple i mean it very simple set by set instructions.  Even the instruction booklet confuses me.  I would appreciate this if someone could help.

Re: Help to set up WPA Please

For some instructions with screen shots look here and also follow the link in Step 1 to see how to connect to the web-based utility.

To secure your router and enable WPA, you have to do the following from a computer which is wired to the router. The computer must be connected to one of the numbered ports on the WRT.

Next open a browser and enter the URL http://192.168.1.1/. If you are using the router at the moment simply clicking the link should work. The browser will ask for a username and password. You don't have to enter anything into the username field. The password should be changed during initial setup. The default password is "admin" if you have never changed it.

You should see the web-based utility of the router which should look similar to what you see in the screen shots. The first page you see is the Setup page of the router.

Now click on Wireless, and Wireless Security. You see the wireless security page.

First enable the security mode and choose "WPA2 Personal" if possible. A few more choices should appear on the page. Select "TKIP+AES" as algorithms. Also enter a pre shared key. This key protects you wireless network. It should be something hard to guess just like any password. The best is some random sequence of characters up to 63 characters long.

Leave the rest at it is and press the Save Settings button.

Next click on "Basic Wireless Settings". You'll see a field "Wireless Network Name" with the wireless network name you are using at the moment. The default is "linksys". It is important to change this network name to something unique. Choose any name or alias or whatever else you like. (It is not like a password but publicly visible thus it does not have to be a random sequence of characters).

Again press the Save Settings button.

If you connected to the web-based utility using the default password "admin" you should also change that for security reasons. Anyone who knows the password can make changes to the router and can check what wireless key you are using. Therefore you must change it. Click on the "Administration" tab and it show you a field where you can change the current password and re-confirm the change entering the same password again. This password has nothing to do with the pre shared key you have set before. The password should be different from the key.

Re: Help to set up WPA Please

The instructions given were good, I followed the same ones when I went through the website's tutorial. The problem for me is the Wireless Security screen never appears. It goes to Set Up and if I click Advanced there is a Wireless tab but no Wireless Security after that. I have a BEFW11S4 V.2 Linksys wireless router.

I have changed the password, but am unable to do anything with the WPA.

Thank you in advance for any help with this issue.

Re: Help to set up WPA Please

I looked through the User Guide for your router, and through the Version Info for your router's firmware, and I do not see any reference to WPA or WPA2 encryption.

It appears that your router does not support WPA or WPA2.

If you think that this is incorrect, please state what version of firmware you are using.

My guess is that you purchased that router several years ago, and you have probably replaced your computer once or twice since then.  It looks like it is time for a new router.

Re: Help to set up WPA Please

It's looking like you're correct. I noticed references to other types of encryptions, but none of them seems to apply either.

In looking at other sites many people have had mixed results with some of the next generation routers, any insights?

[ Edited ]
It's still hard to know what is best to buy in this time of transition from wireless g to wireless n.  My current recommendations are:

WRT54GL
WRT350N, version 1

Note that to get the improved speed and range of wireless n, you will need to have wireless n adapters in your computers.  If you do not want to get the wireless n adapters, go with a wireless g router.  Note that wireless n also seems to be prone to problems in areas with a lot of wireless congestion (i.e. a lot of wireless neighbors).
