Ethernet ports dying on WRT54GL

I put a new Gigabyte motherboard in my desktop computer that connects to an ethernet port on my WRT54GL router.  Now everytime I shut the computer and restart, Windows says that the network cable is unplugged.  The activity led on the router blinks slowly (like once per second or two).  If I plug it into a different port things work.  I am down to one port left!  Both the PC and the router are plugged into a UPS and I never had problems with the old motehrboard.  Any ideas?

Re: Ethernet ports dying on WRT54GL

As your computer is having a Gigabyte ethernet adapter, may i think you need to reduce the Card speed of your ethernet adatper, because your Linksys router work only at 100Mbps speed. To reduce the card speed follow this instruction.

Win XP: Click on the Start button >>> go to RUN>> type in "ncpa.cpl"-
hit OK >>Here(Network Connections) right click on the ""Local Area
Connection"" icon and select properties-Here click on the "Configure"   jaspal
button- Click on the "Advanced" tab- In the "Property" box highlight
Link speed and duplex/Connection type/Network or Media type- And in
the "Value" box select 10 Mbps half duplex/ 10 base T/10 base half mode
and click on OK.

Re: Ethernet ports dying on WRT54GL

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will try it tonight.  I looked at Gigabyte's spec for the Realtek adaptor and it is capable of 1000Mbit.

Re: Ethernet ports dying on WRT54GL

castor,

I ended up getting reliable connection at 10Mbps full duplex.  I never would have thought of this as I thought it just autonegotiated. The only suggestion I got from Linksys phone support was to upgrade the firmware.  I knew that wouldn't help but I did it anyway.  Thanks a lot for your help!!
