E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse

I just installed my new E4200 yesterday and today I recevied and email saying that my account has been banned do to abuse. Probably from over updating. I know its not from mutliple routers updating cause the old one is sitting in front of me and is disconnected.

I can only assume the E4200 update frequency is to high but their is no way to adjust it. Also there aren't any firmware updates.

Anyone else experencing this?

Interesting issue. Have you tried contacting technical support about this?

Yes, I have the same issue.

Had to disable the router's DDNS, and trying to find the solution yet.

Same problem here. How often is it pushing updates? Any fix yet?

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse

So here it is 3 months later, and I'm having the same problem.  I just bought my e4200 a few days ago and have now gotten blocked by DynDNS.org twice.   I spoke to a live chat support person - who told me to send an email to support@linksys.com.   I immediately received a notice saying that Linksys has discontinued their email support - and that I should go to the forum.   So here I am.  How can we get this fixed?   Do any Linksys support techs read these forums?

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse

Well after spending a good half hour arguing with a first level tech and then holding for another 20-30 min, I finally got to talk to a senior tech.   I have to give him credit.   My experience with outsourced support is usually pretty bad (as was this one until I got to talk to the senior tech).    To his and Linksys' credit, he took the time to listen to me, and actually did some online searches of his own.   After doing a little homework, he told me something that hasn't been mentioned here.   If you have the DDNS server active, every time you hit the save settings button on ANY page of the router GUI, it refreshes all of the settings - which includes re-updating DynDNS even if the IP address hasn't changed.  The 54G/L series routers didn't do this.   Given the fiddling I have been doing with this thing over the last several days (playing with the NAS feature), I've been saving the settings a LOT.  So if what he says is true, it might explain the DynDNS blocks I've been getting.

I have a case number now, and tonight we're trying an experiment.   I locked down the settings 7pm, and I'm going to let it sit overnight.   It's been almost 4 hours, and DynDNS hasn't been updated - and more importantly, I haven't been blocked.   There has been some speculation that the unit is updating when the 6 hour lease runs out, and if that's the case, I should be able to see it.   If I make it through the night without any updates or getting blocked, I think I'll be fairly confident that the problem is understood.   If that's the case, I'll just make sure I turn off the DDNS client whenever I'm fiddling.

If I get blocked overnight, the tech asked me to call back with the case number and he'll open a bug report.

Just thought you'd all like to know.

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse - PROBLEM UNDERSTOOD

Ok...so here it is.   It has been nearly 18 hours, and DynDNS has not been updated, and I have not been blocked.   At this point, I'm going to consider this problem understood.   The router STILL shouldn't update DynDNS when we hit save settings, but I consider the workaround acceptable (ie: disable DDNS before making any router updates).

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse - PROBLEM UNDERSTOOD

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing in a different way.  I have a Netgear WNCE-2001 configured onto the E4200 using WPS, and every time I change anything in the router's configuration and save it, I have to re-do the WPS. Seems like every time the router configuration is changed and saved, all the DHCP addresses are being re-issued (or something very near that), so the WPS has to be re-done.  Haven't seen this before, the other router that I had, Netgear WNDR3700, didn't do that.  You could change the router configuration without having the WPS have to be re-done.

Interesting.

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse - PROBLEM UNDERSTOOD

I encountered the problem when I first started configuring my router. After I had finished setting everything up I learned I had been temp banned from DynDNS. MikeNE your explanation makes sense. After I got myself unblocked from DynDNS I had no further issues. CISCO, if you should read this thread, please update the firmware so it doesn’t connect to the DDNS server on every configuration save.

Re: E4200 causing DynDNS Abuse

Same here - sad that even the newest firmware doesn't address this issue.   Wouldn't Cisco want to learn from its customers and take best care of their current flatship SoHo router model?
