BEFSR41 -- router not found

I am a novice at all of this and was told to purchase the Linsys for ease of use.  I have followed all the instructions on the CD 12 bazillion times, and in the end the software says it cannot find the router, and I cannot connect to the internet.  All the lights are on (but nobodies home)!!!  The connectors are correct, and even the wires work if wired directly from my DSL modem to my computer...so, I'm officially lost.  I did disable my firewall in case that was the problem, but it just keeps telling me it can't find the router, and to check the connections....so much for ease of installation.  Can someone offer any suggestions?  Thanx.

Re: BEFSR41 -- router not found

I will suggest you to exit out of setup CD .... disable all firewall for few minutes ...
Follow this steps for Manual Configuration of the router ...
Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet
Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then
click on ok.
On the main setup page select the "Internet Connection Type"
as "PPPoE”. Then provide the username and password provided by your ISP
(Internet service provider) for your connection....... Select the "Keep Alive" option and choose the ........
redial period as 30 sec" and then click on the Save Settings button.
Go to Status tab & if it shows connected status .... try going online ,,,,

Thank you for your support; I was able, via Livechat on Linksys to obtain help last night after literally hours of trying everything.  We are up and running.  Appreciate your assistance.

Re: BEFSR41 -- router not found

Hello, I'm having the same problem "router not found". When I ping 192.168.1.1 it fails but I can ping 192.168.1.100 and it is successful; however, when I type that IP in the browser it's not found. I've tried 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1 and also 192.168.1.100 in the browser and none will connect. The ping result is all I get from the router.

The computers are Dell with a DSL connection (Westell modem), the DSL will work when directly connected to either computer but not through the router. All lights on the router indicate that everything is connected but still "router not found" is the result.

Any help is appreciated, I spent 2 hours on the phone with Tech support and they told me the router was bad and to exchange it for another, which I did, but only to have this same problem.

Re: BEFSR41 -- router not found

Following are the exact instructions I received from LiveChat via which I was successful.  It's important to note you need to reset the router...(first paragraph) before going on; be as precise as possible, and then, to connect the PC to the router and as instructed in Step One.  I copied these instructions directly from the LiveChat, so there are some grammatical/typographical errors, but it worked for me.  Follow them impeccably, and you should be up and running.

After that, a friend suggested I change the password from admin to something useful to you.  You'll need to go back to the new IP address and then go under "Security" to find where to reset your password.

Best wishes and see below:

Please plug the router's power adapter directly to the power socket (Do not connect the modem and the router yet). Press the reset button on the router's back panel for 10 seconds using a pin. After the reset, please do these:
1. Connect the PC to the port one of the router then restart it. (This PC port should be the one that can get online if directly connected to the modem).
2. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
3. When "Internet Explorer" opens type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
4. The log-in window will appear.
5. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
6. Click on the Setup tab, then click on the MAC Address Clone sub tab, enable it and click on "Clone your PC's MAC" then save the settings.
7. Look for the LAN IP which is 192.168.1.1.
8. Change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 then save the settings.
9. Connect the modem into the router's Internet port and wired PCs into the router's numbered ports.
10. Power cycle. To do a power cycle, please power off the computer, router then the modem. After 3 minutes, power on the modem, wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router, again, wait for the lights to stabilize, and lastly, the computers

Re: BEFSR41 -- router not found

Thank you very much, and I try these instructions last night (to the best of my memory from when I was on the phone with tech support for the first router) but the only step I left out was restarting the router. Anyways, your instructions from LiveChat worked, thank you!

I have altered the instructions a bit, adding more detail, for stupid people like me...

Please plug the router's power adapter directly to the power socket (Do not connect the modem and the router yet). Press the reset button on the router's back panel for 10 seconds using a pen.

After the reset, please do these:
1. Connect the PC's ethernet cable to port one of the router, then restart the router.
7. Click on the Basic Setup tab and look for the Local IP Address which is 192.168.1.1
8. Change the IP address to 192.168.2.1 then save the settings.
9. Connect the modem into the router's Internet port and wired PCs into the router's numbered ports.
10. Now do a power cycle; please power off the computer, the router and then the modem. After 3 minutes, power on the modem, wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router, again, wait for the lights to stabilize, and lastly, the computers.

Re: BEFSR41 -- router not found - THE FINAL RESOLUTION!

I understand about "basic steps", and I have saved your revised narrative for future reference!  I know some of us with only rudimentary knowledge of such things get spoken to by those who know as if we also understand the "language".

I am glad I was of some help, and as a TEAM we all worked through our issues.  Perhaps the others who follow us will have an easier time!

Happy Routing!
